National CSA Day Offers Opportunity to Build Health and Join the Local Food Movement
Celebrate Community-Supported Agriculture on Feb. 23 with JUST ROOTS
There may still be snow on the ground, but your local farmers are already ordering the potting soil, seeds and soil amendments that will eventually turn into local tomatoes, corn and pumpkins to be feasted on this harvest season! So while the first local field-grown veggies might still be a few months away, Just Roots and the Greenfield Community Farm is pleased to join other farms from around the country for the third annual CSA Day this Friday, February 23. On this day,you can join other like-minded people around the country who are committed to:
- eating healthful foods and preparing them for their families;
- supporting and connecting with their community’s farmers;
- being kind to our planet;
- and having a great time learning and eating locally and with community.
Just Roots will be set up at Green Fields Market, located at 144 Main Street in Greenfield, on the second-floor from 11:30 am – 2:00 pm and from 4:00 – 6:30 pm. We will be ready to answer your questions and help you determine if a CSA is right for you. Come and visit!
CSA (community-supported agriculture) is a subscription to a season’s worth of sustainable, locally grown produce that is distributed to members throughout the harvesting season. It is a form of investment that allows small farmers to make the necessary purchases and seasonal investments into the farm before seasonal sales typically begin. Your choice to purchase a CSA share on CSA Day helps support the cash flow of your local farm and allows your farmers to focus on growing fantastic food and taking care of the land.
Getting food from a CSA is different from going to a farmers market or using a grocery delivery service. As a CSA member, you make a season-long commitment to a small farmer in your area, and the produce is made available for pick-up, typically at a local distribution location or on the farm. CSA members often get the opportunity to connect with their farmers, neighbors, and have opportunities to be on the land on which their food is grown, even picking their own food from CSA gardens.
The Just Roots’ Greenfield Community Farm CSA prides itself on addressing barriers to local food access and have built in additional opportunities into its CSA. This includes a Build-your-own cookbook with easy, healthy, affordable recipes that pair with in-season produce; cooking demonstrations and samples at CSA distributions; market-style setups that allow you to choose the produce you like best; pick-your-own garden offerings and other on-farm volunteer opportunities; and reduced-price and SNAP-payment membership.
