Our focus this year at the Greenfield Community Farm is on establishing infrastructure and soil fertility. On Tuesday, February 21, we made a good start. More than 25 tons of soil amendments were spread on the two production fields at the farm. These were custom mixes of natural compounds—from lime, gypsum and potash to traces of organic kelp and marl—based on an analysis of our soil. The purpose of the amendments is to improve the soil’s physical properties, making it more fertile and better able to produce lots of healthy local food! Stay tuned for updates throughout the summer as we till the soil, plant cover crops, and add more amendments.
Enjoy these photos of the spreading process. It was a big day for Just Roots and the Greenfield Community Farm!
